Kiribati is a sovereign state in Micronesia, a subregion of Oceania in the central Pacific Ocean. The country comprises 33 atolls and reef islands and one raised coral island, Banaba. They have a total land area of 811 square kilometers and are dispersed over 3.5 million square kilometers of ocean.

Their spread straddles the equator and the 180th meridian, although the International Date Line is indented to bring the Line Islands within the same day as the Kiribati Islands. The Gilbert Islands are the main group of islands, located at latitude 0°30′N and longitude 172°E, about 1,800 kilometers (1,100 mi) to the northeast of Banaba Island, and about 3,700 kilometers (2,300 mi) southwest of Hawaii. Kiribati became independent from the United Kingdom in 1979.


Kiribati, an island country in the central Pacific Ocean, is the first country in the world to offer free wifi to all of its citizens. The initiative, called Air Kiribati, was launched in partnership with the non-profit organization The goal of the project is to provide internet access to the country’s residents, who currently have limited or no access to the internet.

The project is currently in its pilot phase, and will be rolled out to the entire country in the coming months.
